3-D Molecules

Protein Data Bank (PDB)
Search for protein structures and either print, view online, or download to view with an appropriate plug-in (some of which can be downloaded from the site). Features a 'molecule of the month' Also visit the extensive Educational Resources Section.

NCBI's Structure Page allows you to view structures with a simple viewer, Cn3D, available for download from the site. It also maintains its own structure database, MMDB, which is a subset of the PDB.

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center's 3-D Molecular Modeling Page contains a group of protein structure files that are of special interest to educators and provides links to download the Chime plug-in.

Biochemistry in 3-D
Biochemistry in 3D is a collection of interactive tutorials using 3D structures to teach concepts in Biochemistry. It is designed to accompany Lehninger Principles of Biochemistry 3rd edition. Requires Netscape Communicator 4.5-4.7x and Chime viewer, both available from site. There are many biochemistry and molecular structure tutorials on the web which are "Chime"-based.

For a powerful Explorer-compatible viewer, try Swiss PDB viewer for looking at downloaded structures from the PDB or from MMDB.

Biochemlinks
A series of links that provide content, problem sets, quizzes, and laboratory ideas in biochemistry and related topics.

Metabolic Pathways of Biochemistry is an online reference of metabolism for students, scientists, and the world. This site is designed to graphically represent all major metabolic pathways, primarily those important to human biochemistry. View biochemical pathways in either 2 or 3-D representations.

On-line Biochemical Texts and Lectures

MIT Enzyme Biochemistry Hypertext: Chapters 1-4 focus on Chemical Energetics, Enzyme Mechanisms, Enzyme Kinetics, and Feedback Inhibition. Chapter 5 is a terrific self test or classroom quiz on the whole unit that contains questions requiring both knowledge retention and problem solving. The answers may be submitted to an MIT tutor or you can follow a link to the answers page.

Medical Biochemistry - Detailed presentation of numerous biochemistry topics from Indiana St. Univ.

University of Kansas Medical Center – Medical Biochemistry: Provides a series of lectures in power point format. The Molecular Basis of Human Genetic Diseases is an especially helpful section. It provides clear power-point presentations on topics such the mechanisms involved in the development of genetic diseases, research techniques, and current/future treatment options.
