Bioethics Curriculum and Resources
Bioethics is the application of ethics to decision-making
and public policy in biology, medicine, and health care. Understanding
the social implications of biological knowledge and biomedical technology
is an important civic responsibility.

A
Question of Genes: Inherited Risks
These PBS high quality discussion guides are based on a video
series, BUT the video is not needed to benefit from the guides.
Each one-page (printable) scenario includes background on the
case study and discussion questions. Case studies focus primarily
on genetic testing scenarios.

bioethical scenarios.
EIBE Units
are collections of classroom activities from the European
Institute for Biotechnology Education, including a variety of
experimental protocols, practical activities, role-plays, information
and debates. The units are very clearly written, provide information
at an appropriate level, and are well-illustrated. Both biotechnology
and bioethics units are featured.

Genetic
Testing of Newborn Infants, a GSLC curriculum unit, provides
a way to integrate genetic testing issues into the science classroom.
The
High School Human Genome Project at the University
of Washington provides an case study and a bioethical decision-making
template. The Ethics curriculum
module, which can be downloaded, allows students to explore
ethical issues related to the genetic testing of Huntington's
disease.

National Human Genome Research Institute
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the National Institutes
of Health (NIH) have devoted 3% to 5% of their annual Human Genome
Project (HGP) budgets toward studying the ethical, legal, and social
issues (ELSI) surrounding availability of genetic information. This
