NWABR teachers participating in a
hands-on lotion-making activity
and discussion of product safety testing
The 'Consumer Awareness' Workshop
What does "Not Tested in Animals?" really mean? How can
you tell if a shampoo or lotion really does what it says it does?
Who is responsible for testing personal care products and regulating
their labeling?
Consumers take product safety for granted
but regulations for cosmetic manufacturing, testing and reporting
are much different than for drugs.
Evaluating cosmetic claims requires an
understanding of the science behind the ingredients and recognition
of the non-standardized terminology in claims.
Come learn about how cosmetics and drugs are tested, labeled, and
regulated! This engaging 1-day workshop will focus on materials
being developed by NWABR to teach about product safety.
Workshop
objectives include providing teachers with:
An understanding
of the history of product safety testing and current regulations.
Hands-on experience in using a lotion-making student activity.
An overview of curricular materials aimed at increasing student
understanding of product labeling and testing.
Sample curricular tie-ins:
Anatomy and Physiology (skin biology)
Chemistry (emulsions, pH, MSDS and chemical ingredients)
Drug Development processes (compared to cosmetics development)
Research and Testing/Scientific Method (evaluation of claims,
testing using animal models and human clinical trials)
Product development (quality control)
Teachers receive:
Free curricular materials
Access to new loan kits with materials for making hand lotions in
class
$50 stipend for workshop attendance
$25 additional stipend for field test of materials and feedback
6 Washington Science Teacher's Association clock hours may be purchased
upon workshop completion
Funds for substitute teachers are available!
