NWABR Professional Development Offerings for Teachers

CAUSE
Collaborations to Advance Understanding of Science and Ethics

The National Institutes of Health granted a three-year Science Education Partnership Award for NWABR to develop the Collaborations to Advance Understanding of Science and Ethics (CAUSE) Program in partnership with the University of Washington.

The CAUSE program is designed to increase the understanding of the ethical dimensions of science among teachers, their students, and the general public. Nationally recognized scientists, ethicists, and educators partner to develop curricular materials targeted at secondary school science classes.

During the Ethics in the Science Classroom program, teachers actively participate in model classroom activities and acquire tools needed to effectively engage students in critical discussions about ethical issues surrounding science. The grant also supports workshops that will help members of the Speakers’ Bureau address ethical dimensions of their work in their presentations to the public.
